2025 Mini Contest to Make Dulmi Puppet
for Foreigners
Co-hosted by EUMMA Gangkang and Namsangol Hanok Village, this mini contest is a special workshop exclusively for foreign participants. After watching Ishimi, a traditional Korean puppet show, you'll get the unique chance to create your own Deolmi puppet and learn how to operate it through traditional techniques.

What is a Deolmi Puppet?
The Deolmi puppet is one of the six traditional performance arts from Namsadang Nori. It is recognized as both a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage and a Korean National Intangible Cultural Asset.
“Deolmi” refers to the back of the puppet's neck, as puppeteers traditionally control it from behind. Classic versions use strings below the puppet stage, while the puppets made by EUMMA Gangkang are hand-operated, with internal levers that control facial expressions like eyebrows and mouth.

Workshop schedule : Each session lasts approximately 80 minutes.
- 1st Session : July 4, 2025 (Friday) 2 p.m. to 3:20 p.m.
- 2nd Session : July 5, 2025 (Sat) from 2 p.m. to 3:20 p.m.
- 3rd Session : July 12, 2025 (Sat) 2 p.m. to 3:20 p.m.
- 4th Session : July 18, 2025 (Friday) 2 p.m. to 3:20 p.m.
- 5th Session : July 19, 2025 (Sat) 2 p.m. to 3:20 p.m.
Venue : Namsangol Hanok Village (28, Toegye-ro 34-gil, Jung-gu, Seoul)
Fee : Free of charge(Participants will receive a small gift)
Contest Prizes
- 1st prize : 100,000 KRW
- 2nd prize : 70,000 KRW
- 3rd prize : 50,000 KRW
* After the 5th session, participants’ works will be reviewed based on submitted photos, and winners will be announced during the final session.
** Winners will be notified individually via email. Prize money will be transferred via bank deposit.
Number of people recruited : 15 per session (first come, first served) / By episode

덜미 인형은 남사당놀이 여섯 가지 기예 중 하나로, 유네스코 인류무형문화유산이자 대한민국 국가무형문화재로 지정되어 있습니다.
'덜미'란 인형의 목덜미를 뜻하며, 인형의 뒤쪽을 잡고 조종하는 방식에서 유래한 이름입니다. 전통적으로는 인형 막 아래에서 인형에 달린 끈을 움직여 조종하지만, 예술단체 음마갱깽이 직접 만든 덜미 인형은 손을 인형의 뒤통수에 넣고 장치를 통해 눈썹, 입 등을 움직이며 다양한 표정을 표현할 수 있도록 제작되었습니다.
